What is B2B E-Commerce?
B2B is simply an acronym for "Business to Business Electronic Commerce". Most of us are familiar with Electronic Commerce, especially if we have used Pay Pal, EBay or purchased anything on the internet. But that type of electronic commerce is Business to Consumer. Business-to-Business is where suppliers such as Shaw, Mohawk and Beaulieu can communicate and sell to their customers electronically over the internet. Many of you are familiar with the dealer websites provided by the major manufacturers, and in a way, this is electronic commerce. But B2B E-commerce takes things to a new level. Imagine a world where you can simply click a button in your computer and get all price updates from major manufacturers automatically. Click another button and submit a Purchase Order. Wait a few seconds and the PO has an expected ship date, and a reference number already filled out on the PO. As soon as the material ships, the vendors can tell Pacific Solutions software that the items are on the way. And of course, the vendors can electronically submit an invoice, which can auto post, providing there aren't any discrepancies between the invoice and the purchase order. When will this happen? Well, with several vendors the future is here! We know that Shaw, Mohawk and Beaulieu can transmit most of these documents, and many other suppliers are also participating. Adapting computer software for B2B is a huge undertaking, so different suppliers will come on line at different times. Let them know you want it, but be patient with them. Pacific Solutions is currently transmitting the Product Catalog also known as the 832 document. Don't worry; all of this is quite secure. The mills place two mailboxes on their servers for each dealer in the country. One mailbox is for outbound electronic documents, and the other mail box is for inbound electronic documents. When the mill has a pricing update, they place it in the Outbox and your software will pick up the files and import them into the software. All of this transfer is through the internet, but it is invisible to the user. The data flows back and forth using a technology called FTP, or File Transfer Protocol. When we try to open the mail box at the vendor, it asks for a user name and password that is unique to each dealer. This way, you are certain to get your negotiated pricing, and your orders won't get co-mingled with your competitors.
